Yeah, I didn't even think about what time of year it was before posting that comment. I just read it in the NY Times and was like "hey, that's a good quote".

I've been pondering this for nearly an hour. Perhaps it is the baby brain but I can't piece together the quotes with your conclusion. Got time to elaborate?

I believe the writer was suggesting that one could substitute the word "religion" for "governments" and have just as chilling an effect (if not more than) the original quote.
