Apples and carrots and pears, oh my!

The moment to introduce Monsieur Henry to the joys of food is rapidly approaching. The little man has been showing an interest whenever he notices us eating and drinking. When Noodle was beginning to eat foods, her mom used this mesh food holder (see picture) to hold a piece of whatever food was on the menu for that day - if memory serves avocados were a favorite - so we were more than happy when we located one for Henry. I've been rereading the opening section of First Meals and taking notes. While the author advocates rice cereal as a good starter food, I've heard from others this can cause constipation. Thankfully another friend mentioned using an oat cereal instead. Looks like pears and sweet potatoes are baby-friendly foods (as opposed to apples and regular potatoes) so we'll be sure to have plenty of those on hand to share with H. There's just a little over a month to go...

A tip from another mom (Mary B) is those mesh-bags can go in the freezer with their tidbits. Excellent for teething too, when the time comes.

Exciting times ahead! You have a hungry man there.

Those mesh bags are awesome and oh boy... the mess is unreal! (Especially with a nice, juicy peach.)

I never used one of those bags - but I'm thinking of getting one for Liam.
I'd ask your doctor about starting with the oats...for some reason they had me start both Quinn and Liam with the rice cereal and then switch to the oats - I think because you can make it very liquidy. As for constipation - bottles of water and prune juice help. As does adding prunes to the cereal. Liam was constipated for what seemed like forever. And now he poops like 3 times a day.

fyi-- regular old apples are not a binding agent. not easy for a baby to eat as a first solid.. but apples and applejuice will keep things moving. appleSAUCE binds. I have no idea why one form binds and the others move..

but.. any introduction of food can cause delays on a baby's digestive system, so once you do start with solids, add in some water to Henry's diet. obviously don't replace the milk with wtaer.. but water helps flush the system.

I posted about this neat little Sassy device the other day too! Seems like we're sharing some similar experiences. I enjoyed your breastfeeding post too. Come visit my blog sometime!
