Funny, that. We're at that point too. Thinking about making the switch for commuting. But downtown cycling gives me the heebie-jeebies without a baby in tow. Gonna try a DeLite, I think.
One of my old friends used to work at a bike shop and was an avid biker. He thought it was crazy whenever he'd see parents with their kids up high on bikes and not in a trailer. According to him, a trailer is The Safest way to tote your kid around with your bike, because if you fall your kid doesn't fall. And when you stop it's easy to get off the bike and get your kid. We do have one. I got it at a garage sale (not sure if the brand) when Quinn was 15 months old - we took many bike trips with it since we live near a trail. I really liked it and am looking forward to this spring and summer since it is a two seater and we'll be trying it out with both of them in back (hello thigh muscles). If you're going to be biking around streets I would suggest putting a flag on the trailer so that it's visible that there's something behind you. Have fun!
We got a Burley last summer when Amelia was about 14 months old. We decided to go for the one-seater "Solo" model. It wasn't the cheapest option, but it was definitely the sturdiest and well-built (here in Oregon, no less) of the brands that we looked at.
I'm still wary of taking her out on real roads in it, but it's great for riding around the Waterfront or on the Springwater trail. It folds down pretty compactly and fits easily in the trunk of our sedan.
Once it stops snowing, we should meet up and go out for a ride.
Many thanks to you all for your comments. I purchased the Burley Solo Trailer 2008. I imagine when Henry is a wee bit older we'll consider getting something that attaches in the front of the bike (like the Bobike seat our friend (Noodle's mom) introduced us to.) Now I've just got to find a cool biking helmet for Monsieur Henry.
We are also in this dilemma about what to get for a child bike seat carrier...we want to be able to bring our son around with us, but all the options scare me (Boston was rated one of the worst places to bike...)
