Garage sale

Has anyone ever held a garage sale? How do you set one of those up? We have an overload of crap in the condo. When we first moved in eight years ago, the nearly 1300 square feet felt like it was more room than we'd ever need. I swear there was an echo when I yelled for Darr while I was in our bedroom and he was across the condo in the spare bedroom. "Hey Darr," "Darr" "Darr" "Yeah?" "Yeah" "Yeah" You get the point.

So I know we have two kayaks with paddles and a couple of bikes and one hiking backpack to get rid of but I really need to scour this place, locate and determine which crap stays and which crap can be sold, and donate whatever is left over.

We're in the same boat, or uh, kayak (hahaha).

I would suggest when you put an ad in the paper for your garage sale listing that you'll have 2 kayaks, bikes, and a hiking backpack.

I think I have to wait for spring to have a garage sale here - which is going to kill me. We have So Much Stuff. The only reason we haven't had one yet is because I'm still wishy washy about having another baby or not.

Another baby!? Holy schnikes! You are a brave woman. Just when I think a second one might be nice, Henry has starts teething or has a particularly fussy day and the happy second baby feelings flee. Tell me, would you want another boy or be hoping for a girl? Boy means getting to reuse toys <and> clothes (assuming the third grows at relatively the same rate and during similar seasons). But girl means buying adorable dresses and skirts and pigtails and ...

Well - lately the feeling has been No More Babies. I would love to have a little girl - and then an older daughter to shop with and talk with. And since there's no way to assure I'll get a girl - I think 3 boys in this tiny house would drive me over the edge!

Have you thought about Craigslist? It's kind of a pain, but we've sold everything we've listed on there with very minimal work. Especially for your bigger items, I would venture to guess that might work better than a garage sale.

WHAT KIND OF KAYAKS?????????

We have sold a few things on craigslist. Perhaps I shall try that again.

Perception Swifty kayaks. Here's a link to a picture.

I second the vote for craigslist! You have to deal with the inevitable no-shows, though.

is it a backpacking backpack, or a hiking backpack? I might take that off your hands without a garage sale necessary :)

Umm, Christie? This is the Queen of Garage Sales. Have done more than my fair share and have it down to a science. I do one every spring, although it's still a mystery where all this crap comes from year to year. Honestly, I truly purge!

Call me. I'll walk you through it, but truthfully, spring is your best bet to do one successfully.

If you're selling the Cannondale's I would definitely try craigslist. You're just not getting the value at a garage sale where people expect every thing to be under $20.
We tend to skip the garage sale - too much effort and just sell big ticket on Craigslist. One lesson learned, don't use an email address that has your name in it. Set up something neutral to route questions too.

Jen,
Not sure I know the difference. Probably a backpacking backpack as it is a little too big for mere day hikes and it's got good support and padding.

Cathy,
There is always Microsort - http://www.microsort.net/

Sara,
I'm not selling the Cannondale. I love that bike! The old Novara hybrid that I used to commute to work in Tigard when I worked at HSBC is the one for sale. And it'll likely have a $50 price tag just to get rid of it. I'm not sure which bike Darr wants to get rid of but he's currently sitting on three. And, yes, I remember the man with the camera. Rude.

Craigslist is always a mixed bag, but usually the results end up OK. I also agree, that's the place to go for the big-ticket items.

Or, apparently, just solicit your friends via blogspot!

I love garage sales! If you need a yard, ours is available! Unfortunately the garage sale season is pretty much done.
