Loving the kids books

I love books. Books! Books! Books! Love 'em. Love 'em. Love 'em. There are a lot of super cool things about being a parent but reading to Henry ranks high on that list. Whenever I come across a book where the writing is out of this world or the illustrations are crazy originally awesome, I feel as if I've found a treasure. Below I've listed a few of our current favorites. For every one on this list there are hundreds more.

What I love: The fantastic story. Friday is errand day and this Friday everything comes with a dinosaur. Reading this book is super fun because the boy gets to be excited after he does things like getting his hair cut (boring) and going to the doctor's for a check up (yuck). Why? Because everything comes with a dinosaur!
What Henry loves: The DINO-SAURS!

What I love: The story rhymes. Mr. Magee and his little dog, Dee, head out on a camping trip for two nights or possibly three. When a hungry bear accidentally unhitches their trailer in an attempt to reach the marshmallows left by the fire, chaos ensues.
What Henry loves: The marshmallows.

What I love: The depiction of the day in the life of a grade school teacher. She's all ready for school and then, after a day with the kids - with spilled ant farms, loose teeth, a long snake that slithers out of its box, cupcakes that fly, and a hamster that spins in a wheel - she's all ready for bed (at 3:30P.M., poor thing).
What Henry loves: Pointing out the snake, ants, hamster, cupcakes, ball, bee, etc.

What I love: The ending. It's so very clever. This is a book about wolves. Wolves. And it is read by Rabbit, who goes to the library to check it out. It explains where they live, the pack structure, and what they eat - "smaller mammals, like beavers, voles, and...rabbits." Eek!
What Henry loves: Saying "wolves."

What I love: The way the animals all respond to
Duck with a "moo," "baa," "woof," "meow," "neigh," etc. followed by their real thoughts. Plus, duck on a bike!
What Henry loves: The red tractor at the end.

What I love: The story, and the character Doktor van der Dunkel, who - spoiler alert - eventually gets "elected chairman of an important scientific committee." I hates me some grumpy killjoys.
What Henry loves: Doktor van der Dunkel's rocket.

What I love: The message, finding use and beauty in the old. Otis's putt puff puffedy chuff makes me want to curl up and go to sleep like the little calf, and then I want to wake up and hang out with the little red tractor at the farm. Ending the day underneath the apple tree with this sweet little red tractor is bliss.
What Henry loves: Yeah, I'm going to have to go with the tractor on this one. Also, he loves the - spoiler alert - parade at the end.

What I love: These words are much better words than the ones Henry occasionally hears from me. With cute little rhymes, kids can learn a bunch of big words that help them understand the world in which they live.
What Henry loves: The pictures of people, particularly the family with the mama, papa, and baby.

What I love: It's a pigeon with a hot dog, what's not to like? We're fans of the entire Mo Willems library, including the Piggie and Gerald series and Knuffle Bunny books. Perhaps it is the simple drawings or the sharp wit - whatever it is, Henry loves that bird.
What Henry loves: When Pigeon says, "That's it!" and "Wait a second."

Love the list! I absolutely love Big Words for Little People. I'm going to have to check out those other ones you talked about.

Client: sometimes kids make fun of me for reading too much.
therapist (me): SCREW THOSE PEOPLE!

that'll be $90, please. with a side of counter-transference.

Thanks for the list. Via paperbackswap, I have either ordered or added to a wish list all the books you mentioned.

I'm somewhat embarrassed, but also pretty OK with, my lack of enthusiasm with books. I like reading them to Avery, but don't enjoy finding the ones I really enjoy (vs some truly horrible children's books I've come across), so that you've done this is very helpful!

Cathy,
I was quite surprised to discover I like a lot of Jamie Lee Curtis's books. Normally I'm annoyed when the acting crowds dips its toes into every other available money stream but her books are really cute with good lessons. If either of the boys are into dinosaurs, the dino book is my absolute favorite!

Zozo,
An effective technique, totally worth the $90.

Megan,
Fabulous! We have lots more if you ever want to borrow a few. I could spend HOURS and THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS at Powells in the Kids section alone. There are so many great books. If the story is good, it doesn't matter (that much) about the illustration. And if the illustrations are great, that can make up for a pretty cruddy story. The other not-mentioned Henry fav is known as the SAM I AM book, which is, of course, Green Eggs and Ham.

Anneke calls Green Eggs and Ham "Train."

Avery LOVES Green Eggs and Ham. She walks around saying, "That Sam I Am, That Sam I Am!"
