Further domestication of self

I'll be starting sewing classes in a few weeks. Part of the prep works involves making sure the machine I'm using is in good working condition. Um, but, uh, I don't know how to sew so how can I test the machine I'm taking the class to learn how to use? Hmmm. The answer turned out to be spend an evening at the kitchen table drinking wine and calling over the husband every time assistance was needed. In the end, I was able to successfully wind the bobbin with the thread I'll need for the project we're doing (an apron, in my case a Spiderman apron for Hen), thread the needle, and stitch a sample piece of fabric together using the foot pedal. Phew.

Haha, I'm totally going to drive you crazy in that class! I'm not kidding when I say that I know NOTHING about how a sewing machine works. Perhaps I should take a "pre-intro" to sewing class so I don't feel like a total moron.

Oh no. I can top both of you! My mom taught me so sew simple shirt waist dresses when I was in middle school. So when I took home ec in 8th grade, our project was a dress. Pffft... I already KNEW how to sew, so I barely paid attention. The front of a garment is always put on the fold of the fabric so there's no seam. I cut right down the middle. Then proceeded to put the zipper in at the back hemline. Upside down. And the worse part was the fabric was this hideous green flowered thing that I had NO business even wearing in the first place. (not that I could anyway -- with an upside down zipper and seam down the front) I taught myself after that.........

have fun! I really enjoyed the class I took last spring, but then summer and pregnancy conspired to halt my sewing career. as with all detail-oriented hobbies, I have done little more than dabble, but it's a great skill to have and keep up. although these days it's really not cheaper than buying stuff already made, as far as I can tell.
