So good I was motivated to finish it in a day.
Eliza is a happy mother of two. She is married to an industrious and successful man she loves. She has adoring parents and a dog. Walter is a serial killer on death row who kidnapped Elizabeth twenty years earlier. The story moves back and forth from the present to the summer of 1985. The summer when Walter, while disposing of one body in the woods, is discovered by Elizabeth. But instead of killing her, he takes her with him. The strange relationship that forms enables her to survive. Just weeks away from his execution, Walter sends Eliza a letter, hoping to use his manipulative powers to entice her to help him. And Eliza, still working through the guilt she feels for surviving when his other victims did not, just might get caught in his trap. The story is fast-paced and thoroughly compelling with well-developed characters and a great predator-prey dichotomy.
15 down plus 37 and volume 1 of the Norton Anthology of English Literature to go.
