Summer reading is so on, America. We have been speeding through the program, and discovering some excellent stories along the way. Here are our current favorites.
Nate the Great
What I love: The short, abrupt sentences are very Hemingway-esque. And I love the letters Nate the Great leaves for his mother when he's going out to work on a case.
What Henry loves: The pancakes.
Mercy Watson to the Rescue
What I love: Oh, Mercy. That pig is awesome. The sisters next door are awesome. The illustrations are awesome. The stories are quirky and fun to read.
What Henry loves: A piece of hot toast with a great deal of butter on it.
Huck Runs Amuck!
What I love: Huck's persistent desire to get to those succulent, yummy flowers. And his eventual (spoiler alert) selflessness, even if it only comes about through peer pressure. This is a great, awesome, wonderful read-aloud book.
What Henry loves: HE IS! HE CAN'T RESIST!
Small Saul
What I love: Small Saul loves the sea but he's too short to get into the Navy so he decides to go to pirate college instead. I love that Small Saul is easily distracted during Treasure Map Interpretation (wish I had that as an elective in college), is born to sing sea shanties, and gets a bunny tattoo to intimidate his fellow pirates.
What Henry loves: That it's a book about a boy who loves the sea.
The Chicken Thief
What I love: This wordless story's illustrations are amazing. It took me awhile to figure out how to make it fun to relate the story to Hen, I rely heavily on the written word in other books, but it is worth checking out, as is the sequel. The last book in this series is expected later this year.
What Henry Loves: The chase, the part with the boat, and that the story varies a little bit each time we "read" it.
The Day the Cow Sneezed
What I love: The tale explains how one small, teeny tiny mistake can have huge consequences. Also, who knew billy goats couldn't drive?
What Henry Loves: That lots of stuff is smooshed.
