I finished my second snake scarf (a Christmas gift for a relative) and the first of several purple hats I plan on making for the
Click for Babies project. I may have to forgo sending this hat in because it is the very definition of gargantuan. It's HUGE. I know next to nothing about knitting so I went to a local yarn store and the woman there told me with the yarn I was looking at, I should try needles a size up. I think, given my results, that she really meant to say a size down. There's enough yarn on that skein for two (and possibly) three hats so I'm trying it again using the smaller needles.

The fabric looks reasonable in density -- i.e. it's not too holey -- so maybe you should just try casting on fewer stitches? It looks like the pattern would either be in multiples of 4 or 8.
I would keep your needle size and do this: check the gauge of the hat you knitted (i.e. how many stitches make up 4" width?). Then multiply that number by 3, so that you find the number of stitches needed to make a 12" hat. FIgure out if the pattern needs stitches in a multiple of 4 or 8, and then round your 12" number up to the right figure. (e.g. if you get 58 stitches and you need a multiple of 8, then round up to 64).
Cast on the final number and knit the hat, slightly adjusting the pattern as you go.
Hope this makes sense. It's much easier than I am making it sound. Hope you don't mind the unsolicited advice. :)
omg, these are so cute!!! love the snake scarf especially.
btw, speaking of crafts. My mom collected enough cherry pits and did make that bread sack she was talking about.. she showed it to me on Skype and it looks kind of oversized. I'll get to try it out in 3 weeks and let you know if it was worth the trouble!
@anya "my mom collected enough cherry pits and did make that bread sack". That's love. That's love.
I'm interested to hear if that crazy thing works.
@Rachele - I'm going to give that a try. I haven't gone too far so I'll start over with less stitches. Thanks!
