It's Dime Day! We counted up the dimes in Hen's piggybank and headed out to satisfy my five-year old's desire to visit the toy store (i.e. Target). We had just over $38 in dimes (and dollar bills, yo). We added $13 to Hen's savings account, tucked $13 away to donate, and Hen put the rest ($13) in his Snoopy money sack. Hen opted to get one big ball for $2.99 and save the rest for next month when we will have our next piggybank raid looking for, you guessed it, nickels!
This month's charitable contribution went to the Carnegie Institute of Science. I gave Hen the option of going with one of the choices from Quarter Day, the Oregon Humane Society or Heifer Intl, but he wanted something new. I asked if he wanted to give money to help kids (no) or pets (no). And then, after perusing one of those charity evaluator sites, came across science. 87% of Hen's donation will be used to help science. Sweet. I've already started the search for a more science-specific charity to propose next month and these folks look promising. Or this place.
Side note: For the folks who mentioned Kiva as an option, do not despair that your suggestion wasn't heeded. Kiva is definitely on the list but I want Hen to have a slightly better grasp on the notion of giving before introducing repayment of loans and such.
