Book one: Down the Rabbit Hole by Juan Pablo Villalobos

How's that for starting the year strong? I picked this book up at Powell's. It was on sale, had a note on the cover that it was short-listed for the Guardian First Book award, and it was short - a novel with only 70 pages. Sold.

The story is told to us by the young son of a drug baron. The boy is tucked away in a palace. He knows bad language. He understands guns. He tries to remain strong because in his world it is unacceptable to show weakness even as a child. Sequestered in this place, he has time to focus on his hat collection, his love of all things samurai, and his desire to have pet Liberian pygmy hippopotamuses.

This was an oddly entertaining book.

1 down plus 51 to go.
