This place is awesome. We arrived mid-afternoon, set up the tent, and then made our way to the lake, where we spent the next four hours leisurely hiking to our favorite newt-viewing spot. Hen and I enjoyed the cool (not shockingly cold) water, checked out bugs, and saw two crawfish - a tiny one we quickly scared into going under a rock and a larger, courageous one missing a pincher. After dinner and s'mores I let Hen play with sticks in the fire - this sounds a lot more dangerous than it was, I assure you. And, in between helping maintain the fire and scouring our campsite (and a few empty ones near us) for suitable woods chips, I got to read and drink my one beer. A thing worth noting, Hen was up so late and was so tired that he actually requested to go to bed (sometime between 10:30p.m. and 11p.m.). We only made it through four picture books before he went to sleep. We head out again with Miss Avery and her mama on Wednesday. I'm starting to think a longer road trip might be something worth doing. This kid loves nature.
