In Memoriam

One of the most enduring taboos in American politics, the airing of graphic images from the September 11 attacks in a partisan context, died today [4 Sept 08]. It was nearly seven years old.

The informal prohibition, which had been occasionally threatened by political ads in recent years, was pronounced dead at approximately 7:40 CST, when a video aired before delegates at the Republican National Convention included slow-motion footage of a plane striking the World Trade Center, the towers' subsequent collapse, and smoke emerging from the Pentagon.

The September 11 precedent was one of the few surviving campaign-season taboos. It is survived by direct comparisons of one's opponents to Hitler.

Note: If you have the stomach for it, you can see the GOP 9/11 "tribute" at YouTube. To my eyes, this is less tribute than it is exploitation. It makes me so sad. Keith Olbermann has a personal comment at the end which is worth watching.

Ugh... kind of like being kicked in the stomach. McCain's whole schpeel is all based in fear and it makes me sick. He'll "protect" us and "fight" for us, when the more significant protection that most people need is something he has no interest in.

And I'm sorry to hear about Henry's stats. Not even sure what to say there. We'll be keeping fingers & toes crossed for good, insightful, productive appointments.

Ugh is right. Olbermann was right to speak up at the end.

geez louise. I'm so glad he spoke up. Thanks so much for your commentary and highlighting this. I almost always turn the president/Republican convention off because it just bugs the crap out of me. Sort of a head-in-the-sand approach, but I blame the baby :).
Wow. that video is so exploitative and lazy and lame. I hope it had the opposite effect they intended it to have.

It's sad... Olbermann just got "demoted" this weekend because of his disgust with that 9/11 piece, among other seemingly impartial comments. But Bill O'Reilly is still fair and balanced? Hmmm.

I was actually going to post about this soon...probably tomorrow night. It sickened me... esp being a liberal who was watching the RNC to give them fair play and hear their plans... it was like they took advantage of me... I felt violated.

Sorry to hear about Henry's numbers... what's the latest?
