Hey! Wait! Your adoring fans request a longer commentary.

Really, the first thing I thought when I saw the headline was, "Boy, I wonder what Christie has to say about this."

Stevens is nearing 90 and he's been the lead of the "liberal bloc" during his latter years. (He's also the senior most member of the court.) It's being reported that he wanted to leave with enough time for Obama to replace him with another like-minded judge before the next election. The conservatives already have the majority in the court so hopefully Obama won't shy away from getting a great judge with a liberal bent. If he doesn't get another liberal voice on the bench, well, I don't even want to consider it. With six conservative members - don't forget Ginsberg has had some recent health issues and that may mean she, too, will be leaving sooner rather than later - it would be pro-business and anti-individual rights decisions galore.

Meh. I predict a threatened 'buster holding out for a "moderate" (might wind up being Stevens -- he WAS a Gerry Ford pick) until at least the mid-terms are nigh. That should be a real wrench in the works of our elected idoltatry.
