Good to know

When checking out info online about contractions because, yeah, I do that sometimes, I came across this:

"Goodbye" is a contraction for "God be with you". Who knew? (Um, not me.)

Some earlier forms include "God be wy you," "God b'w'y," "Godbwye," "God buy' ye," and "Good-b'wy." Wow. The first usage recorded is from a letter written by Gabriel Harvey in 1573: "To requite your gallonde of godbwyes, I regive you a pottle of howdyes."
