A week of Cousin Amels

A daycare/preschool snafu for Brother Nick meant I had the pleasure of hosting one Cousin Amels (a.k.a. Mia) at the condo for the week. The cousins play well together but there was a period of adjustment every morning as they got used to the interruption in routine, and by day three Henry had had enough of sharing all of his toys. It should be said that Miss Amels is the easiest toddler in the world to put down for a nap. If bed time goes the same way, Brother Nick actually gets to rest in the evenings. Lucky bastard. Seriously. Here's what I had to do:

Step 1: Tell Amelia it was time for a nap and head into Henry's room, sometimes she lead and sometimes she followed.
Step 2: Ask Amelia to get into bed.
Step 3: Tuck Amelia in, handing her the binky and her blanket.
Step 4: Give Amelia a kiss and tell her goodnight.
Step 5: Leave room while Amelia turned to her side and went to sleep.

We spent a lot of time at the condo since we were trying to help Amels with potty training (she went twice!), but still managed to go to the park and OMSI. Amels completed an art project that I framed for her parents. And we were lucky enough to have one Miss Josie over on her third birthday for some cupcake decorating. (Henry's feet are still sporting tinted pink dots from the sprinkles that fell on the floor that he walked on.) The one bad thing was the reaction I got from Henry when I dropped him off at daycare on Tuesday with Amels in the car. Yeah, that was not pretty. In fact, I've described it as the worst daycare drop-off to date. Egads, was that ever ugly. It was so bad, in fact, that we made the decision to keep Henry home from daycare on Wednesday rather than go through it again. (Because of an early meeting Megan had to attend there was no way for us to take Henry to school before Amels arrived.) All in all, it was a pleasure to host Cousin Mia at the condo. Of course there were pictures...
My niece can paint that!

Eric Carle's From Head to Toe, a most excellent toddler read.

One way to control toddlers is to put them behind playground bars.

Slide!

Concrete mixers and dinosaurs in sand, folks.

Floating ball, a toddler favorite.

Would you like some red sprinkles?

I'm so glad such a good report was written. Amels had a good time as well, and slept well at night. Your account of naptime is the exact same for bedtime. This is why we're scared for number 2...we KNOW it won't be as easy. At least now the kid can talk to each other in spanish...we're in trouble...

It was so fun to meet Amelia! I still feel like I'd met her before since I've seen so many (so many!) pictures, but I do think this was the actual first time. Thanks again for hosting and providing lots of sprinkles. I'm sure you'll be finding those all over the floor for weeks.
