My next project? I'm totally enamored with the idea getting rid of a lot of our things, thanks to this article I read recently in the NY Times. However, I'm a realist and know that throwing out massive quantities at one time isn't really an option for someone like myself. So I'm going to start small, with the closet. There have been things that have been hanging in my poor closet for years now that I haven't worn and probably will never wear again. How many pairs of underwear does a person really need? Are those nearly worn out socks something I must keep just in case I don't ever do laundry again? So, yeah, I'm starting this process with getting rid of the extraneous clothing in my closet. I'm keeping my favorites, which includes the hand knit sweaters from my mom, a few of my "I'm thin! Yippee!" clothes I hope to one day fit into again, my wedding dress (a simple Anthropologie number I bought for less than $100), my Chanel shoes (I only have one pair), and the essentials. Everything else is out of here.

Busy morn
Sometimes I'm amazed at how much and how quickly I can accomplish things when I don't have a toddler in tow. By this afternoon, I was able to complete my grocery shopping, get to the bank, do two loads of laundry, fold and put away the clean clothes, take a donation to Goodwill, mail some packages at the post office, finally get the artwork I bought for Hen's room to the frame shop to select a frame and matting (it'll need to be picked up in a few days), bake a batch of chocolate chip cookies (which Darr will have to take into work or I'll be forced to eat 'em all), strip the beds, remake the beds, Swifter the hardwood floors, pick up Hen's room and rearrange the toys on his train table, empty the dishwasher and refill the dishwasher (is there ever a day there isn't a dish to be cleaned?), hand wash the rest of the dishes, and clean the litter box. So, yeah, I'm enjoying my day off.

Wow! You sure did get a lot done. I read the article and am encouraged to start in my closet also. I am like you and find it hard to get rid of things because "I may need it someday".
Right on!!! I'm always amazed at how much you get done with the toddler in tow.
@penny - exactly! I bought a Hawaiian shirt as a joke at target for years ago and still have it. It's only been worn once and what if I need a Hawaiian shirt again?!? You can't just throw it out, can you?
yes, Darr, actually, you can just throw it out. If you can't, Megan would be happy to do it for you.
I hate to go against the tide here, but Darren's completely right. What's going to happen the next time he's invited to a Hawaiian-themed party??? It's really an investment to keep the shirt.
I know, I know... I need help.
clearly we are begging for a hawaiian themed heathens brunch, now
What you need, Darren & Christie and perhaps Amber, is a single container that you allow yourself to put "I might need it one day" stuff. Once the container is full, you either have to throw something in it out to make room for new items, or throw the new items out. I think you'll be shocked at how you never open the container to use the "I might need it someday" stuff.
And, remember, if you have a Hawaiian themed party to go to and have thrown out your shirt, that is what Goodwill is for. :)
And with that, I shall tell you that you make me feel like a slacker, Christie. Damn you and your get-stuff-done drive!
yeah, I read that article and was like, man, I'm glad I don't live in an apartment anymore. but I'm all about clearing out clutter. we're due for a cleansing.
instead of going to the store to fill our bare cupboard I'm reading blogs because I just don't feel up to the carseat step!
You sure are busy on your 'day off' LOL!
I love living simply. I started in Maine in the early 90's, following Amy Dacyczyn and her "Tightwad Gazette". I've never looked back. Pretty much the only thing I have two of is cats ;)
I hope you enjoy downsizing. Keep us posted on how it's going
