Dr. A - Other than the fabric, there is none. Although if I see the cats getting their claws out, I'll be forced to break out the spray bottle and set 'em straight.
there are plastic things you can put on the corners to keep them away--unsightly, but maybe good temporary measures. hope they leave the couch alone!!!
Z - I know there are things you can buy, I just haven't used any of them. Although after seeing Mabel McMabelson attempt scratch #1 on the arm this morning, I've covered them with Cling Wrap and blue painters tape.
I have heard (but never tried) that just laying foil on top of a couch will keep pets off. If they dare jump on the oddly shiny, metallic surface, then they immediately jump off because of the noisy commotion created by the foil.
I think it's meant less for protection of couch and more for training of pets. I have no idea if it works but hey, foil is cheap, right?
