Book four: The Leftovers by Tom Perrotta

The Leftovers in Perrotta's novel are the people left behind after the Rapture. There is the Guilty Remnant - those who dress all in white, have taken a vow of silence, and smoke cigarettes to proclaim their faith. The Barefoot people believe the only way to survive being a leftover is to party all the time. Holy Wayne starts the Healing Hug movement, and not long after he takes a teenage bride to deliver his "miracle child".

Perrotta's Rapture doesn't conform to biblical prophecy. People of all faiths are raptured, along with the fraternity guy who used to tape girls he had sex with to share with his buddies on the big screen. Those unable to deal with this oddity, chief among them Rev. Matt Jamison, become Rapture deniers, and set about proving it was not the Rapture after all.

4 down plus 48 to go.

But, what did you think about the book?

The story is simple. In a Rapture-like event, several of the inhabitants of Mapleton disappear. Without any warning, while doing everyday things, they just.vanish. The story begins a few years later. The folks that were left behind have picked up their routines again, but they are not the same people they were before the event and they constantly ask the same question over and over again.
