Auction preview

I am donating a Dessert a Month (for a year) to Hen's preschool auction. I feel fairly confident I can work with most dietary needs but the vegans stump me. No eggs. NO BUTTER?! How does one do it?  Since I have no real interest in finding out, I had to include a "Sorry, no vegans" clause to my offer.

It's sort of hard to read so here's the print: Don't have time or the inclination to bake? Don't fret. Your personal baker will whip up a mouth-watering taste sensation once a month for you and your family for an entire year. How does fresh strawberry sheet cake made from handpicked local berries sound? Or Nanaimo bars, that crazy Canadian concoction of butter and sugar and chocolate and more butter and sugar? Key lime pie anyone? Have you ever tried a pavlova? The sweet meringue crust is nicely balanced with a tart yogurt and whipped cream topping. Other potential desserts include Hungarian shortbread, cranberry and apple pie, orange olive oil cake, blueberry buckle, pots de crème, and more. Is your mouth watering yet? Please note, the baker does not possess the necessary skills to accommodate the dietary needs of vegans.

Christie you should open your own bakery and then I could come down and help you run it!

I'm pretty sure the dessert-a-month at A&C's school sold for $600 last weekend.

I think it's a great idea, too.

Since you said no vegans, does that mean us gluten-free-ers are OK to bid? If so, I'm on that like white on rice. Awesome.

Wow -- that is indeed a nice donation. Lovely photos too.

On the subject of vegan deserts -- Whole Foods sells some great vegan muffins and a nice vegan chocolate cookie. I think canola oil is used for the fat ingredient, but I don't know how they go without eggs. I should look at the full ingredient list next time I'm there.

Amanda - Love the idea! How soon can you get here?

Rachele - I think Amber mentioned this (or something like it in passing) and so I thought, hey! I could do that!

Amber - If I can get $200 for it, I'll be ecstatic. If I can get anywhere near $600, I'll be triple ecstatic.

Megan - Gluten-free I can work with. I haven't made very many GF desserts but I'm sure there are a ton of good ones out there and I'm willing to give them a try.

Betty - I stole the pictures from Saveur. I am not that good with food photography. Also, I'd never stick a big old flower on top of a cake.
