I sometimes find myself in this situation when the background is bright and the foreground is in shadows and if you meter off of the former, you get this...
But if you meter off the subject in the foreground, you get this...
And neither of those are awesome, so you turn on your flash and meter for the background, adjusting so it is a little darker than you'd normally shoot, and you get this...
And, yeah, it's not perfect but it works because you can see both the background and foreground and your subject is super cute.

that's awesome! Do you adjust the power/strength of your flash? I know that it has increments but I haven't really played with it.
I did not adjust the power/strength of the flash. You have to put the flash in commander(?) mode and set your flash sync speed to 1/250th or slower.
