Do you think crème fraîche is necessairy, or is there a good substitute?

I'm totally gonna make this. And eat it.

You can make creme fraiche at home if you feel so inclined. And another Google search says you can mix heavy cream with sour cream as a substitute. Go for it! (It only calls for one tablespoon.) And enjoy. It's quite decadent.
